Imagine this… your parents die when you are just 11 years old and you have to live with your brothers. The only reason that they are still  together is because of their brotherhood. This shows after all that Ponyboy has been through a lot at a young age with his brothers and somehow they have all stayed with each other because of the bonds that they have formed with one another. Ponyboy, Johnny, Dally, and Soda - Pop a lot of self discovery within the book because of how they were raised before they started living together. An examination of the novel in The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is when Ponyboy learns how to care for people (Aka HIS Brothers), and friendships turn into Brotherhood over time.

S. E. Hinton writes Cherry tells Ponyboy that the Greasers are more emotional then, “You greases have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re sophisticated - cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us” (38). This part explains how even though Cherry was saying that Ponyboy was more emotional than the Socs would ever be, he was shocked.  As he had seen with Johnny you can only keep your emotions bottled up before fear starts to slowly build up inside of you. Hinton also identifies how Ponybuy feels after the Socs attacked him and how one of his brother saved him, “Easy Ponyboy, they ain’t gonna hurt you no more.” (8). This is related to the quote because this after the fight between Ponyboy and the Socs and it reveals that Soda has Ponyboy’s back, and nothing will ever change. “” (149). Internal because Ponyboy doesn’t want him to die. Because he is the only person that Ponyboy is close with and they understand each other.

“I walked down the hall in a daze. Dally had taken the car and I started the long walk home in a stupas. Johnny was dead. But he wasn’t” (150). Internal because Ponyboy was very sad and just also very dazed at the fact that his best friend was dead. This shows when they say he was walking alone back to the house with nothing but a blank face. “I guess so.” I said with a sigh I didn’t see what Two - Bit was sweating about” (171). External because Ponyboy was like what my brother is sweating getting worked up about because it doesn’t make a lot of sense to Ponyboy. “You really killed him, Johnny?... I had to, they were going to kill you” (57).

“The Outsider” defines that brotherhood is everything even when you can’t see it. On the one hand Ponyboy is so close to everyone that only Johnny knows him, for who he really is. But on the other hand ponyboy shows that he was grow since the beginning of the book because when other people
