While reading Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover, I felt placed right into the society of the book. It didn't feel like I was reading a book, I felt like I was a part of Kenna’s and Ledger's life. When I chose to read this book I expected it to be a very well-written love story with complex struggles and obstacles within the characters. The story of Reminders of Him is more than a love story. It was a story of love, loss, perseverance, and happiness all in one. Reminders of Him not only met my expectations, but also exceeded my expectations and made me find a newfound sense of what people can go through in their life.

Reminders of Him is the story of Kenna, who went to jail for one very heartbreaking mistake. The book starts with Kenna getting out of jail and returning to her hometown, a small town in Colorado, in hopes of finding her daughter that was taken from her while she was in jail. Kenna will do anything to have a place in her daughter's life. While trying to find her daughter, Kenna has to push through the pain of the loss she sees in her everyday life. Along the way she meets Ledger who has ties to Kennas daughter. As Kenna and Ledger's relationship intensifies so does the conflict with Kenna's daughter. Kenna and Ledger have to find a way to navigate their lives while it feels like everything is pinned up against them.

Written by Colleen Hoover, there is no surprise that attention to detail was brought throughout Reminders of Him. Hoover had the perfect balance of in-depth details but also kept the plot moving along. For example, “When they started talking about what you went through after I ran away that night, I knew I would rather die than sit through a trial and listen to the details”(Hoover 252). The specific information about Kenna’s time during the trial helped elaborate on why Kenna didn't defend herself. Also, the specific details of what Kenna was feeling at that exact moment helped me understand how much pain Kenna was in and why she took the action of pleading guilty and going to jail. Being able to feel the emotion that Kenna was feeling helped me follow the plot better and it brought the book altogether.

Along with that, Hoover articulates very powerful themes throughout the book Reminders of Him. The theme of second chances, perseverance, trusting in others, and not judging others ties the book perfectly together. Not only did the themes add value to the book, but the book also taught me lessons and helped me learn more about what it is like to be a female in prison. This book is a romance-filled novel, but it also has a very powerful lesson that everyone should take the time to learn.

Another thing that Hoover does that makes Reminders of Him extra special is the alternate point of view between Ledger and Kenna. Giving the readers an inside look at what Kenna and Ledger are thinking about each other really tugs at your heartstrings. Not only does it make you feel emotion but it also intensifies the plotline of the book.

Reminders of Him seem to have it all: meaningful themes, attention to detail, and valuable alternate perspectives. I highly recommend this book, especially to teens. Teens would find so much value in this read because it shows how life never goes the way you planned but it can work out in the end. Life isn't easy and this book really pushes to show the challenge that all people will face in their life. Overall I would rate Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover at 5/5 because of the fantastic way she articulated the plot of this story.
