This Thing Between Us is written by Gus Moreno is a horror/psychological novel that dives deep into grief, yet there is something else lurking throughout the story.

Starting the novel, Thiago, the main character, is reminiscing about the death of his wife Vera. As he does so, he brings up the virtual assistant Itza they had purchased which soon after started to perform weird tasks without Thiago or Vera asking. This aspect of the book makes me question the overall idea of the novel. For example, is the message about the loss of a loved one or the supernatural the main idea? As the story progresses things with the Itza begin to escalate; waking Thiago up in the middle of the night. After Vera’s death Thiago can’t take living in the apartment the two of them shared combined with the media asking countless questions He decides to move out to Colorado where he can be by himself and forget about his past. Yet what had seemed to trigger the Itza  followed him. He was unsure about who or what this thing was, yet he knew he needed to find out. Could this thing be a supernatural being or could it be symbolic for his own demons creeping up on him?

I really like the writing style Moreno has. He reminds me of a British author I like alot which is Matt Hariag. They both simultaneously tell entertaining stories that have a lesson in mental health hidden within their novel. Although Gus Moreno takes a different route and includes more allusions to well known horror pieces like the exorcist and some of Stephen King’s work.

In conclusion I thoroughly enjoyed my reading of this novel and would definitely recommend it to other horror literature lovers.
