The Journey up Everest

Peak is a realistic fiction book by Roland Smith. This book is about a 14-year-old kid named Peak who lives in New York with his mom, Ralf, and his two sisters. Peak got in trouble for climbing a building in New York and had to get sent out to live with his biological dad named Josh. Josh gave Peak an opportunity to climb Mount Everest in the hope of making it to the top before his 15th birthday, but to get there, he will have to brave the elements and avoid illnesses.

This book is full of action and adventure. The plot of the book is so interesting and keeps you reading. I think Peak is definitely a dynamic character because he changes over the course of the book by getting stronger and understanding how everyone feels during the climb. I think the book is very good and the themes of the book definitely relate to our lives. Some themes I have picked up on are to adapt to overcome and put others first, which are great things that people should do here in their everyday lives. I think Peak is a very caring and motivated character because even when he is feeling exhausted, he keeps pushing through and making sure he encourages his fellow climbers to keep climbing. Roland Smith’s writing style is very descriptive and intriguing; he really pays attention to the details that make up every character's personality. I completely recommend this book to all middle schoolers and high school students. Smith pays attention to the little details that keep the reader engaged with the book and that's why this book is so good.
