Piecing Me Together, by Renee Watson, was a very inspiring novel. This is a powerful realistic fiction story set in modern day is about a sixteen-year-old African American girl trying to find self-advocacy in a world that fights against her. Jade believes that she needs to get out of her poor neighborhood in order to be successful in life.  Jade goes to a Woman-to-Woman mentor group for African American girls that will help her find her voice and her purpose in life. Her mentor, Maxine, guides and leads her through her battles in life. But it wasn't always perfect. In the beginning, Maxine struggled with her own life and a harsh breakup that happened before. The two work on themselves throughout the book, while teaching and learning from each other. 

I think Renee Watson did a great job of enhancing the characters and the theme of self-advocacy and coming-of-age in the book. The book was hard to follow because there were a lot of important details that were so short and brief. All the conflicts in the book were so alike, which didn't make the plot very interesting. The plot didn't go anywhere, making it less interesting to enjoy. Despite the conflict, I think it has a good plot structure and strong sentences. I think the antagonist could have been more clear also. I am disappointed with the outcome of the book. The beginning of the book is supposed to set the tone for the whole book, but it didn't live up to the expectation. While this book wasn’t a very good read for me, I definitely recommend the book for young adults and older teens.
