Picture yourself in the shoes of a smart and creative girl that has so much success, but does not know how to start in life. Piecing Me Together is an amazing realistic fiction book by Renee Watson. Throughout the story, you see through the eyes of an African American teenage girl named Jade Butler, a shy and very kind person. She lives in her house with her mom and uncle. She believes she must get out of her poor neighborhood if she’s ever going to succeed. Jade is offered the chance to get paired with a mentor in the Women to Women program that will get her a scholarship. Maxine, her mentor, helps her get through life and helps Jade succeed in her tough times. In the book, Jade learns about a black slave who went on the Lewis and Clark expedition.

I was not sure I would like it at first but after I finished the book I really enjoyed reading it. I love how Jade is always willing to lend a hand to someone who needs it, like she is always willing to help her mom with anything. Renee Watson does a very good job describing the book in detail. I think the author did well explaining the character's personality and thoughts throughout the novel.
