Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was written by RoaldDahl yesterday. I feel that it is a fascinating book, and I was greatly impressed by the wild imagination behind the factory and the animated descriptions of all the characters.

The book is mainly about a boy named Charlie, who lives with his mother and four grandparents. One day, Mr. Willy Wonka, the most famous chocolate maker in the world, makes an announcement that he has hidden five golden tickets amongst all his chocolates, and the lucky five who find them will have a chance to visit his mysterious factory and receive a lifetime supply of his candy. Charlie gets the last golden ticket by accident, and he goes to the factory with his Grandpa Joe. During the tour of Wonka’s factory, Charlie sees many crazy and interesting things, like a chocolate waterfall, Oompa-Loompas, squirrels, and so on. The other four kids on the tour disappear one by one in various accidents, until Charlie is the only one left, and Mr. Wonka tells Charlie that he won, and will be the new owner of the factory.

I very much enjoyed this book. Charlie was born in a poor family, which made him grow up to be a kind boy, unlike the other four children, who were all spoiled by their parents; the others get their punishment for their greedy actions during the trip in the factory. Charlie’s parents and grandparents love him a lot, as we see when they buy him his favorite chocolate on his birthday even though they are very poor. In my opinion, the message of the book is that loving someone doesn’t mean satisfying all his or her wishes, or just letting him or her do everything that he or she wants, especially children. The other children in the novel don’t know what is right or what is wrong, because they haven’t had to interact with the real world very much and there was no one to tell them what they should and shouldn’t do. For example, AugustusGloop’s parents let him eat as much as he wants, making him fat, and in the end he is sucked into a glass pipe because he couldn’t resist drinking from the chocolate river.

Aside from this, I was really impressed by Roald Dahl’s incredible writing skills. He included many crazy ideas in this book, such as all the amazing machines and wonders in the chocolate factory. From his descriptions, Wonka’s chocolate factory felt like a small utopia to me, full of fantastic and unbelievable things. Each character in the story is unique and easy to recognize, even though there are many of them, like cute little Charlie, crazy Mr. Wonka, and so on. I may look for this writer’s other books and read them soon.

Last but not least, I want to say that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a very nice book and I think reading it will be a wonderful experience for everyone.
