I read the book “Refugee”, by Alan Gratz. This book is about the lives of three different kids named Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud who are all trying to get to another country for a better life. Joesf is in Nazi Germany and his father got taken to a concentration camp and is released. Josef, his mom and his sister must pick him up the day of his release and flee to Cuba. Isabel is trying to escape to the U.S. by boat, but getting caught by Fidel Castro will get you arrested. Mahmoud was living a normal life but his apartment got hit by a missile. Luckily, everyone survived the explosion. Mahmoud’s father came running from work as fast as he could and said they had no other choice but to go to Turkey, to live a safe and secure life. All three characters have one common goal escape their home country for a better life in a new place. But to accomplish the goal, there’s only two things that need to be done. Don’t get caught, and survive.The book is interesting but hard to follow because every few pages, it goes from the story of Josef to Isabel to Mahmoud and cycles around again. Each character crosses paths with danger, but focusing on three all at once makes the book less enjoyable. I feel like I’m reading three books at once. For example, there’s a part in Isabel’s story when she and her family are sailing to the United States and almost getting hit by a tanker, and then her story ends and you start reading about Mahmoud and his family looking for a place to spend the night.
