Divergent is about a world divided into five factions that each represents a different virtue, 16-year-olds have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another. Dauntless the fearless, Abnegation the compassionate, Erudite the intelligent, Amity the peaceful, and Candor the honest. Beatrice, the main character known as Tris is Divergent which means she doesn’t fit in any of the factions. If anyone knows she is Divergent, it would mean death. Throughout the time that she is in the faction of her choice, she has many difficult decisions and has to hide that she is divergent, but not everything is bad she falls in love throughout the story. ” Then I realize what it is. It’s him. Something about him makes me feel like I am about to fall. Or turn to liquid. Or burst into flames,” Says Tris (Roth, Divergent, 2011, p. 149). This quote describes the moment Tris starts falling for Four which is when they're on top of a Ferris wheel together. Throughout the story the author, Veronica Roth gives really good physical and personality descriptions about the characters. Veronica Roth describes Tris as a brave, willed person with blonde hair and blue eyes. The book has very good characterization. For example, “My brother Caleb, inherited my mother’s talent for selflessness.” (Roth, Divergent, 2011, p. 3). Veronica is giving a statement about Caleb, Tris’s brother. I also believe the book has a very good plot structure everything is very believable and seems very real in my opinion. “Becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it, that’s the point,” says Four (Roth, Divergent, 2011, p. 239). Through this quote, Veronica Roth is trying to express that Dauntless is not all about being Fearless. It means to not let your fear control you. I would definitely recommend this book to older teenagers and adults because it’s a very descriptive well-written book that you will definitely enjoy, but I would not recommend it for younger people because it consists of bad words and descriptive violence.
