The House on Mango Street is a novel written by Sandra Cisneros. This book was written in 1984. I really enjoy this book and I totally recommend it to other people. However, some may enjoy this book some may not based on personal preferences. Here is a few features of the book so that you can make your own choice.

The House on Mango Street is a story about a young Latina girl named Esperanza. Esperanza moves into Mango street with her family and the book follows her life for the time that she lives there. She matures throughout the book and learns about life.

The story takes place on the fictional Mango street in Chicago. The story often centers around Esperanza and her friends or her sister on small adventures. Esperanza seems relatable to other people around her age who read this book, she notes often that she feels like she does not belong and that she feels insecure.

One thing that is worth noting if you are planning on purchasing this book for your child or someone younger is that this book does tackle some serious subjects such as rape and abuse. If your child is well educated then I do recommend buying this for them but if you’re child is fairly young and would not understand such serious subjects this may not be the best book for them. So please do take that into consideration.

I enjoy this book as a “coming of age story” but if you are not interested in such stories you may not enjoy this book. I do recommend it to anyone who would be interested. Once again it is all up to personal preference.
