Shopping List for the Dead
some light reading by Proust to pass the time
toothpaste to clean my decaying, old bones
a bottle of milk would be so sublime
–for calcium crumbling postpones
thank you for getting these items for me
I’d do it myself, but my neurons –dead
no muscles to move, a mess I would be
–haven’t felt since I lay on my deathbed
but none of that matters, my dearest friend
you can touch dirt with your warm, fleshy toes
I am still jealous, I will not pretend
–of gentle pain, to stand in stilettoes
I cannot forget life –though mine’s far gone
but darling, when your time comes, please move on.
