Life on the Lake by Sadie Sutton

Chirping birds awake me from my sleep

Song loud and rhythmic

Stirs emotions, makes me weep

Nothing else could mimic

Why must we be so involved in the modern whirlpool of the world?

We hate what we don't want to understand

We judge what we observe

I ponder this as I sit in the sand

I want to connect with nature

I want to be like the birds

I want to be cold like a glacier

I want to be heard

I love the lake that makes me think

Lake so large, makes me shrink

The author's comments:

This piece is one of the three sonnets I wrote for my creative writing class about Lake McConaughy. I go to this lake every summer and every time I feel there, I feel very mindful. This is about things I experience and think of at the lake.
