City of Empaths
Empaths we are, we sense the joys and pains
And fears and sorrows, angers, pleasures clear
As if our own, they course in through our veins
We fuse with those around us who appear
And this, an abstract love we sometimes fear
But always we remember by its end
Why we appreciate and hold it near
The healing through which only it can mend
For our own hearts detest the eager snare
Of feeling of our own, lest we be read
Our quiet, still resolves agree to share
What others suffer quietly instead
And while it frees our minds to sometimes feel,
Assumed from others, pain is not concealed.
