You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better. -Anne Lamott, from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life.

We settle for the people who make us feel alright
And it's the best we've got so we hold onto them tight
And I say I love him every night
We settle into comfort in order to feel close
But I've started making stretch marks; you can see them past my clothes
And the sad thing is he knows

This is the wrong way to love somebody
I can't wake up in the night to feel a stranger next to me
This is the wrong way to love somebody
I ask for space when I need an army
To break me free
This is the wrong way to love somebody

We settle for the last place, instead of fighting first
We settle for okay because it can always be worse
But if the roles were reversed
I settled into something I never intended to
I should have fought my battles, but instead I chose you
And now I don't know what to do

Because I know
This is the wrong way to love somebody
I can't wake up in the night to feel a stranger next to me
This is the wrong way to love somebody
I ask for space when I need an army
To break me free
This is the wrong way to love somebody

You were in love but she chose someone else
We were just dolls sitting on someone's shelf
And when we grew up, we settled for love
But this person isn't someone I want to be
Because being good enough isn't good enough to me

This is no way to love somebody

This is the wrong way to love somebody
I can't wake up in the night to feel a stranger next to me
This is the wrong way to love somebody
I ask for space when I need an army
To break me free
This is the wrong way to love somebody

We settled into love that wasn't love at all
We chose to shrink ourselves instead of standing tall
I've never felt so small
