Sand Dance
The hills of California
Brown and dry and beautiful
Oh, how they moan for want of water
Oh, how prettily they roll.
Dancing on the fault-line of the sea and the sky
Stroking the horizon with a silken-sweet voice:
My boy.
Between I and the ocean he stands, arms outstretched with the world in his hands.
I sing for him and for the hills, lonely and moonlight-filled
The silver sheen of night doth reach them even still.
The kitchen doorway seems the safest place to be
When you release the earthquake from in between your teeth
I promise to give you all the space you want to breathe
I will learn to become everything you need.
I will not break, I must stay up
All through the night, 'till you are done
Tell me your story, lay your head in my lap
I'll stroke your softness, read the lines of your hands
For I wish to know you, you're like the hills:
So beautiful-lonely-moonlightfilled.
