A Definition of Myself
I think that I’ll just try
To make it through today
Even though my eyes are waterfalls
And I don’t want to stay
Perhaps you hadn’t noticed
All my friends left long ago
People who knew the little things
That only friends will know
Like that her eyes changed colours
Reflecting off her clothes
And that his laugh got deeper
When he was laughing out of love
Just you and her are left now
To give me human touch
When I’m curled amongst the pillows
When I sob that “I’ll throw up”
Stop pushing me into a box, world
That’s not where I belong
My soul gets dry and crumpled
And my colours are then gone
I’m not in the dictionary
I have no one definition
If I just make it through today
All that you can do is listen.

I was inspired to write this piece after reading This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff.
