Days Like These
I miss days like these
when we would stay up late together,
worrying about finishing the project we procrastinated on
as the staggering moonlight barely lit the room.
when the soft haze of moonlight turned into bright sunlight,
sleepiness clouding our minds
but we’re grateful we finished our homework.
when the sunlight pours in through the gated windows of classrooms
and we count the minutes until the period ends,
watching the hands on the clock move.
when the radiator screeches through the silence,
asking for us to read louder and laugh more.
when something unexpected happens
and the classroom is filled
with reverberating giggles and lingering laughter
when we would race through Mr. Rubin's room,
chasing each other on the spinning chairs,
loud feet on classroom tiles.
when the salty mist of the morning would follow you
as you passed through polished doors
that swung shut like heavy breaths.
when the fluttery whispers in class
turned to warm, boisterous laughter in dismissal.
when moments became memories.
