The Clock
For the boy the desk was brought
To study the textbooks that was bought
In the corner, a clock clicked by
Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick
Yet how long the desk lay empty
Dark, dusty, and left idly
“Where was the boy all that time?”
Said the clock with each sad chime
The unused desk was still
Surely, he’ll come, he must, he will
With each second, the clock clicked by
Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick
Soon the boy became a man
He had left without any plan
In the dust, still was the clock
Tick, tock, tick-
...
The lights turned on, and there he sat
Twenty years too late, he came back
He reached out for his ancient books
In the words, for hope he looked
How he regretted his childhood
If he had studied and did good
Alas, the silent clock told
That he had grown much too old
Hard he tried to start the clock
To get it to tick and to tock
But nothing could make it work
Time was nothing but a cruel, cold jerk
The sad truth he had to have understood
There was nothing else that he could
The empty, lifeless clock said
His chance was long gone dead
The man was still, then stood up
He knew now that he had grown up
As he held his beloved son’s hand
He showed him the Promise Land
The son was too young, a child
Ignorant, riley and wild
But when that pencil was picked up
Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick
