Forward and Back
One step forward,
Two steps back.
They try to make up
For what they lack.
Everyone thinks
That they're okay,
Nobody suspects
That it's their last day.
One step forward,
Two steps back.
They try to make up
For what they lack.
They tell their parents
That they want to move
Because they think
Their life will improve.
One step forward,
Two steps back.
They try to make up
For what they lack,
But nobody here
Knows who they are;
Nobody knows
That they're a star.
A while into the future,
Their minds are clear.
They know now
That they have nothing to fear.
They met new people
Who they could call their friends.
They found new reasons
To forget all the "ends".
They forgot all the taunting,
The torture, the screams,
They realized they'd forgotten
To follow their dreams.
They realized that it
Had never been them,
But the bullies who couldn't see
That they were a gem,
And now they realized
That to get this far,
They needed someone
To lay the scar;
The scar of beauty and love,
Peace and laughter;
The scar to one's
Happily ever after.
They take two steps forward,
One step back.
They know that they've made up
For what they lack.
Their minds take them
Into the past,
Which is when they realize
That the future arrives so fast.
They want to tell their bullies
That the pain leaves a beautiful scar,
But the pain was necessary
For them to become a star.
Two steps forward
And one step back,
They try to help others
Make up for what they lack.
But really,
There's nothing gone.
What everyone says?
It's all wrong.
You're perfect,
Just the way you are.
Don't change what you're like,
Don't put your heart in a jar;
Don't seal yourself away
To make acceptance out of hate.
Maybe you're able
To change your fate,
But to do so,
You need to be yourself,
Even in sickness,
Even in health.
Take two steps forward,
Forget the step back,
Ignore what they say;
There's nothing you lack.
