I Hear America Laughing
I hear America laughing, because it is all we can do not to cry
Half the nation laughing through forced smiles, they did win after all
Children laughing and pointing at a small man’s huge promises
48% of America laughs, you can’t laugh if you didn’t vote after all
Policemen are laughing, must be from the gas they were ordered to fire
Syrian Refugees smuggle laughter, muffled by American flag gags, they pray no one notices them
I hear laughing across the sea, some even in solidarity
A coalminer laughs as he can barely put food on his table, he hopes his vote will change that
Adam, who I teach in my swim class, laughs when I ask why his mother took off her headscarf
An illegal farm worker has yet to laugh, she was too busy feeding America to hear who won
Deafening Laughter over “Proud to be an America”
Each laughing because they know their country will be changed forever
Night to Night- Love to Love- On and On
