The Shadow
A little person follows me,
I fall over when I chase it.
My mother calls him a shadow.
He’s sometimes big, sometimes small, and sometimes really tall.
He does not like the rain,
He always disappears.
He only appears in the sun and sometimes on a cloudy day.
I always wondered why he disappeared,
Did he not like me?
Was he afraid of baths?
Maybe that is why he doesn’t like the rain.
My mother always said, “No silly”.
Then why does he not like the rain?
Will he melt like that old wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz?
“No silly!” the sun is not shining, so your shadow hides from you.
My friends have shadows too,
The shadows follow them too.
Could they be attached?
There is no way.
When I wear a hat,
He wears one too.
I run on the playground,
He runs too.
Must you follow me?
Must you do everything that I do?
He must be a coward for staying so close to me,
You must surely be a copycat.
