The city has all sorts of people come out at night
Druggies, street walkers, stray
Come out and pollute your sidewalks
Spread your disease over the roads
The people have been hibernating
See them they want you to, but ask politely
Enter the password, enter the club
Only correct words or no entry
No sudden movements, no funny business
Want your head corked with lead?
Yes, they have those too
Mother never told them to pick up spares
They melt into the pavement and camouflage the gravel
Look, the police are coming
Go home little boy, go home to your wife, home to your mother and your wife’s mother
Instead of scraping the blood off the dirt and the needles from the swing set
There was a fight
A grand applause
The sweat still clouding up the air
The dogs still barking behind broken glass
A laugh heard miles ahead
Someone’s bandana snagged the rusted car bumper someone’s wallet left the front seat
All the victims
The night takes them, take as it please
Chew it and spit it back to your face
The sun’s coming up
Look at the light
Go home little boy, you’re safe now
The moonlight no longer casts your shadow in the bricks
The dogs no longer bark
The night is gone
