The Fangirl
They say she’s wrong
They say she can’t fall in love with characters
It isn’t right, It isn’t healthy
They say she can’t like fiction
It isn’t right, It isn’t real
They may tell her she’s wrong
but she knows
it’s they who are wrong
Yes, fiction is fake,
characters are flawed
they bleed, they drown
they fall, they die
and yet
they breathe, they soar
they live, they fly
Characters are flawed,
but that makes them perfect
They may suffer,
but then things get better
Things will get better
That’s what she tells herself
As her she cries herself to sleep,
As she counts her broken dreams
As her “friends” betray her
As her parents shout
over the sound of her weeping
As she is once again left alone
Books are her exit
from this awful world
Books are her entrance
to a world where people care
even if it’s an illusion
Because she knows,
All fangirls know,
Things. Will. Get. Better.
