"we accept the love we think we deserve"

Once upon a time, there was a little chick.
She was unique and her personality was a real kick.
She was pretty, shining golden haired,
But for some reason, she was always scared.
She was scared of life, she was scared of having flaws.
At night, her nightmares’ monsters dragged her down with their claws.
So she stayed up all night, counting glowing stars,
When the sun rose, she slept and dreamt of harmless cars.
Before the sunset, she went in the woods to wander,
Spending time alone and running from her mother.
Once, she found a white little rabbit,
It ran off and she decided to follow it.
She fell into a hole so deep, so dark,
That she couldn’t see a thing, not even the tiniest spark.
She kept on falling further and further,
As the hole appeared to be deeper and deeper.
She ended up lying on the cold floor
Of a room having only one tiny door.
To get out, she had to drink a potion,
She did so, and found a world where people lived with passion.
She met funny people: twins
And a cat who always grins.
She also met someone on whom she wasn’t very keen:
A quite frustrated lady called the Red Queen.
People told her she had an important mission:
To beat the Red Queen and to kill a dragon.
More than ever, she was terrified,
The pressure was too big, so she just cried.
Her adventures in this world won’t ever end,
Every once in a while, she’d come back to visit wonderland,
Whenever she popped a pill or sniffed white powder,
Or pushed a syringe under her skin to make her feel better.
She escaped her sorrow and fear by drowning into alcohol,
With smoke above her lips as the last breath left her soul.

This piece is a modern and quite shocking retelling of the well known "Alice in Wonderland" fairy tale.
