Watching From The Driveway
I don’t remember the night he tried to get me to go outside and play games in the parking lot
I was too tired
I don’t remember being terribly cruel to him when we were little like I’m told I was
Maybe it’s best I don’t
But I do remember hugging each other till one of us couldn’t breath
I remember playing video games
And playing on the playgrounds
The things I remember make me smile
I love to see his smiling face appear in that driveway
I love to drop what I’m doing
Forget my shoes
Jump over the baby gate meant for the dog
Run out the door
And there he is
No matter if I am blinded by the sunlight
or am using the starlight to see
I know
He’s there
This is the brother I have known the longest
This is the brother that has a family
This is the brother I have written about
From a young age
This is him
Now, I watch the driveway
Waiting for him to visit me
To stop by after a long tiring day
I watch for the smile that says
“show me your latest achievement sis”
because I know that every chance I get to be with him is a chance
I should not take for granted
So for now I wait
I watch
Out that window
And look toward the driveway
