Fallon, Nevada
Driving
Rolling wheels
Smooth down
Black pavement
Pale sand
Pimpled with
Burned green sage
Stretches far
In each direction
Spattered halfheartedly
With fluttering cottonwoods
Reflected sky
Spills across
The road
A mirage
Of Nevadan topaz
Shimmers away
As rolling wheels
Come closer
Flat dessert
Harsh to many
Home to few
Gives way to
Abrupt purple
Majestic mountains
Towering and kingly
Misted with distance
Strong sunlight
Desert
Harsh to most
But some call
The cottonwood
And sage
