The Downfall of the Gods
Imprisoned on an eery night,
thunder roars with frightening might.
The birds lay silent, the clouds lay still,
and give the Earth a fearful thrill.
Lightning strikes the distance near
and ignites something, a sea of fear.
It lights the sky like a million fires,
undressing the Earth of her dark attire.
The Gods grumble and roar with rage,
throwing hail from their heaven cage.
Goddesses weep at the days descent,
giving rain to the Earths dry tent.
Zeus, in fright, grips his fading throne.
Hera smiles, but knows no home.
Hermes loses his winged shoes
and Ares, for once in his life, does lose.
Poseidon's trident drowns his hopes.
Artemis loves and soon elopes.
Athena burns by the hands of man,
and loses Athens to Romans stand.
Hades reddens and grows large horns.
Olympus falls and seems forlorn.
Memories of the past start to leave,
and the fates stop, and no longer weave.
Man smiles up at the darkened sky,
as the gods go down with a final cry.
A new God takes the almighty throne,
and rules over man, all alone.
