I Officially Understand My Mother
I cannot sleep.
Not because of
the splattering rain
that joyously throws its entire being
against my window.
Not because of
the heavy comforter
pinning my body to this
heirloom/hand me down mattress.
Not because of
the speed at which my brain
tries to lurch right out
of my paper- mâché skull.
Not because of
a snoring, or
talkative, or
frisky lover
who peers at me with a moonlit eye.
No.
I cannot fall asleep
because my knee
hurts.
