FOR MY SONS AND BROTHERS AND HUSBANDS AND FATHERS
The world is yours for the taking:
you may take her as you please,
as you see fit,
for she cannot object
to a man’s declarative claims
of ownership.
She will paint endless skies,
sing lovely songs through the hum of the wind, and
each and every day
she will crack her landscape and
set herself on fire,
all the while simultaneously
drowning.
Her suffering will have purpose,
so worry not.
Like any great artist,
she will obtain results:
while she wastes away,
you will grow taller,
grow dreams and grow a sense of
entitlement
until one day you will stand atop her corroding corpse,
listen to her shallow gasps,
and wonder where the
(your)
time has
gone.
