Modern Day History
I.
Like the creature of a modern day Sappho
Her toes trace a pirouette on ice cold tile
Fingers lacing light into her hair
Grecian profile illuminated by the incandescent glow.
II.
A future king, a king’s son
A new passport and quick kisses
Flawless hundreds and thousands at the barrel of a million guns
The Lion at the Lamb, the Lamb really the Lion
The Lion really just looking to escape the cage of this city
This city, its lights a cavity in the stars
Its people occupying the busses and subways
Celebrating these false idols
A new passport and quick kisses
I wish you could stay a little longer.
III.
In the rain washed streets
Lights reflecting off the pavement
In slivers and golds,
Here is where I will mourn for you,
Hair drenched in sweat, tears and fresh water
Late rush hour traffic will swerve around me
For in my grief I am powerful
My hands will dig at the individual stones
Embedded in the tar
Slick with rain and the blood running from my already mangled fingers
Only after the 6 o’clock bus has missed me
Will I stand and remember your name
However the bitterness does not leave me
And perhaps one day will I find you here again.
