Freelance Lover
Her avoiding eyes
Were bitter for a little while,
And I don't blame her.
As we exchange our distant smiles,
We know we aren't what we were.
The distance was too far,
To the point where we didn't see the same stars.
And though I called to make sure she was alright,
She didn't pick up every night.
She was out, growing up,
Filling her wine to the top of the cup.
While I was home, falling down
In her untouched wedding gown.
I should have put a lock on the door,
So I wouldn't have bruised myself on the floor
Trying to grab the handle as she slammed it shut.
But I went and wallowed in a rut.
Her avoiding eyes
Were bitter for a little while,
But now they're just sad.
I don't blame her
But it doesn't mean I'm not mad.
