Surroundings
PART I: Girl
Porcelain face
Voluminous gray eyes
Thin lips touched with red
Prim and delicate, carefully arranged and posed
Separated from the harsh variation,
the blending of red and white, the tell-tale Vacillation
There is only Contrast-
A black frame to a
China face
PART II: School
The fluorescent lights burn the outside away
And make it dimmer
The mute button is pressed
And shadows grow and breathe
The laugh lines,
Wrinkles- suddenly visible
Back to the movie which
Plays the siren song, “This is real”
PART III: Houses
In stately repose
Gazing down from the hilltop,
It evolves
Individual bricks turn to slates
of color
Ornate metal-
Elegantly simple bars
Clothed windows-
Nude and tall
Pillars to push it up-
Soaring columns to keep the ground down
PART IV: Morning
Parmesan sprinkled on spinach
Packaged neatly
Everything in a meat locker
Under a slate ceiling
Step in to step out
Don’t forget the gloves, hats, scarves, coat and
Antifreeze
For your fingers, head, face, body and
Blood
