I have never heard it, phantom whale calls,
so deep they make one cringe, so shrill they make one cry,
except before I was born.

I know,
before I developed the lips, eyelashes, fingers, brain,
I have now,
I lived in the ocean,
I floated like a little walnut,
I was the simplest creature,
I heard the whale song.
This makes me wonder,
was it only I who received this gift,
or was it you also?

Giant whales, so big, beyond my comprehension,
peaceful beauties,
we have killed you all.
We stabbed and raped and took
for no good reason.
We took our ships,
I take blame somehow, I feel so awful,
we sharpened sticks and killed your
families
peace
your song traveled across the ocean,
you swam together for centuries through the deep,
mystic water.
What were you saying? Were you speaking through god?
Are you god?
I think we should worship you.
You blinked your eyes slowly, and your tears melted
with the ocean
We drank your blood with greedy slurps.
Are we evolution’s mistake?

I want to learn your song.
My race will never learn,
I am so lost with my race.
If I could trade in my clumsy legs and sharp words,
I would gladly accept your fins and godly
demeanor.

Okay, This was truely beautiful! I am also a lover of whales and this was exactly what I thought of them. The best part for me was your phrasing and language. Keep Writing!

it's interesting, when i was sitting by the ocean with my dad he explained the reason we feel so calm near the water is because of the sound of the waves...it's the same sound we hear when we are in the womb. Your words are very true and very deep...I however do not believe that our race was a mistake, we are evil and vile as well as graceful and endearing. Beautiful poem.

Yes, I completely agree with you. Completely. I am not even a person who is obsessed with saving the environment, but I do believe that we should stop killing whales.

This poem takes me through wonder. I never really thought of the whales before reading this. It does touch my heart. I would have to say though, it could be better, this was constructive, but a little more rhyme/alliteration. But good. Great job.

My favorite part

"What were you saying? Were you speaking through god?

Are you god?

I think we should worship you.

You blinked your eyes slowly, and your tears melted

with the ocean

We drank your blood with greedy slurps.

Are we evolution’s mistake?"

Its really deep and very beautiful.

Its calming but its really sad but it makes people think.

Keep it up.=]

Wow. Yeah, sometimes when I see pictures of cut down rainforests and polluted air, I feel the same way. Odd isn't it? How sometimes the greatest stranger is your own kind?

When I read the title, I never imagined the poem would be anything as amazing as this. It sounds so quiet but still powerful. Love it! (:
