Umbrella
A boy and a girl stand silently
as rain slowly slips from the sky.
He holds an umbrella,
barely big enough to cover them.
It serves only as partial shelter,
rain still falls upon her back.
But he stays dry and
untouched by the shower.
Her lips tremble
as he whispers something in her ear.
Then, as silent as a ghost,
he walks away,
taking the umbrella with him.
She begins to cry,
raindrops hit her face
mixing with her tears.
And, eventually, it’s hard to tell
The difference.
The sky might as well be crying salt tears
And her eyes raining fresh water.
Just as her world fills with water
And she begins to drown,
Someone calls out her name.
