Where I'm From
I am from watching Dora the Explorer and eating chocolate covered bananas
and hula skirts and dancing and singing to Lilo and Stitch.
I am from fighting over who sits in the white chair made for two at my grandpa’s house
and eating ice cream DRUMSTICKs.
I am from going to visit my grandma’s motel with my dad
and searching for Easter eggs.
I am from taking back roads instead of the main, crowded ones
and rolling the window down to feel the fresh air.
I am from playing the statue game with my parents,
and my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and “freeze!”
I am from my best friend moving over 1,000 miles away
and talking on Skype weekly.
I am from photos crinkled with memories
and looking back.
I am from flying on the swing set
and jumping off.
I am from having my dad’s side of the family at my house for Christmas
and taking group pictures.
I am from staying at my grandparents’ house when my parents went on motorcycle trips
and I am from going to Toys R Us.
