In Pieces
You broke me off a piece of your heart
And I gave you a piece of mine.
And we clung to each other’s gifts
As we parted.
And I sift through the pieces
Of other’s hearts
That I’ve collected over the years.
And I take yours
And I hold it tightly.
I know you hold mine too.
And I know you have other pieces
Just like I do.
But it still hurts to know
That you trade pieces with other people.
And it scares me to think
That my piece may not be
The one you cling to
As often as another.
That the more pieces you gather,
The paler mine grows
In comparison.
