Radiance
A shy flash of her cosmic smile
Outshines the arrogant blaze of the sun
And the merry twinkling of her eyes
Shimmers more beauteously than a fickle star.
But in a way she is a star—
The sun to my planet.
My eyes are instantly drawn to her—
An unique flash of lightning in a torrent of dull—
And the openness of her face sucks me in,
Like a lesser planet falling into the gravity of its sun.
My trajectory alters to keep her the center of my universe
And I spin and spin to keep pace
But she is always out of reach
And I am held at a distance by the gravitational forces
Of uncertainty and protectiveness.
Her absence casts me into the shadow of night,
Yet when I rebound into her arms,
She is there once more to make me strong,
As my heart opens to accept her gift of daylight.
Without her radiance I am dull and lifeless,
And my roots of hope and joy wither without sustenance,
While I stumble with self-inflicted blindness
Until my body fades into the shadows as ash and dust.
But when her soft, warm rays caress me,
My roots find the nourishment to grow
And my branches reach out to the light,
Growing strong and tall under her benevolent care.
The fire in my heart rekindles
From the spark she so gently places there,
And she coaxes me through one rotation after another,
Through times of joy and sorrow,
As I strain to return the gifts of life and hope
She has bestowed upon me.
And I breathe
And I survive
And I aspire,
Because I always know that
After the numb loneliness of night
Her shining fingers will deftly dart
Through the curtains of my doubt and pain
To dance upon my heavy eyelids
And nudge me awake,
As she warms my heart with a gentle touch
Banishing my fears to a distant place
And coaxing me to soar besides her,
Into the warmth of the welcoming sky,
On delicate, yet strong, gossamer wings
Forged from light and love.
