Yesterday's Children
There were children
laughing outside when
they were marionettes
and simple strangers
on their strings
and we heard them
and the teacher heard
them too;
for when he shut
the window the children
were no more
and the child left
inside us
became masonry to
the walls and
polish to the linoleum
but these children
will learn to love this
chamber and the children
will get to hate it
forever,
not at this moment
when there is too
much stilness
and it must take
time for their lungs,
let them quietly
fill with venom,
these children are balloons.
