a job on the road
An infinity of strangers,
a sea of open eyes,
I wish to be transparent,
but,
to them I know I am not,
I stare at them,
they came here with lives,
as I often forget,
they walk the earth with cares,
my deepest despair may not ever exceed their pain in regret,
I stand still watching them,
they have become quiet with expectation,
a tiny girl climbs upon her mother's lap with a hunger for entertainment,
she asks her mother why I haven't spoken,
I won't speak,
instead I start forming a figurative box around myself,
I manage to seem at verge of breaking out,
but never let my hand reach into the space outside the box,
soon I forget the sea of eyes,
it's just me and what I do best,
impersonate the unknown,
I imagine being on a tightrope,
and falling,
only to sway to a new form,
the crowd thunders,
I seem lost without sensation,
but somehow I have character throughout my actions,
through my eyes I still see the eyes catching with the light of hope and joy,
then I remember my constant silence,
it is powered by the eyes of those who watch,
the constant hunger of a low-pay job is only fed,
by the eyes,
filled with laughter,
that I'll never let enter my lungs.
