I look up and only see daunting wire, but auspicious stars;
I look down I see velvety scarlet, yet pliant daisies;
I looked through the fence to see the fated smog, and the reprieve of dawn;

I look at my neighbor and see bone, yet still his intrepid faith endures;

One day I will find the light and rectify the wrong,
I will abscond from the somber shade.

The author's comments:
We were reading Night by Elie Wiesel and his account of the Holocaust inspired me to write about the victims, and what they must have encountered in the concentration camps. I imagined them seeing the terrible conditions they were slowly dying in, yet they still imagined the beautiful things they wanted to see.
