after midnight
the best time to be alive is
when the day just begins
when nobody is awake to see it
unfold
but the lost and the
lonely and the lovesick
it's 1 am
the only light is a lit cigarette
smoke pours into your lungs
(but it can't warm your heart)
it's 2 am
even the wind is fast asleep
everything is still and perfect and
don't move
(or you'll ruin it)
it's 3 am
keep quiet
(or it all becomes real again)
4 am
your sleepy eyes beg to shut
and your hands grip a cold mug of coffee
(you don't even like coffee)
it's 5 am
the sun stretches and yawns and crawls out of bed
the city begins to wake as you lie down
clutch the cold covers to your chin
and wrap your arms around a stiff pillow
(because it's all you have left to hold onto)
