Biting Remarks
He doesn’t hurt me with punches
It would be too easy
for me to become the magician,
drawing the attention of the audience
away from the fading bruise
until it disappears completely
No,
that would be too easy
Instead he chooses his words
with deliberation and care
because he knows that
even though they won’t scar
I will see them on my body
as if they were engraved
Yes,
this is how he hurts me
I can dodge his fists
and dance away from kicks
but there is nothing
that can act as my shield
against the agonizing blows
of his precisely-planned words
