(Not So) Happy Birthday
There is something horribly sad
about birthdays
Another year leaving your fingertips
the turning of a page
Candles blowing out a year
Only wisps of smoke left like memories
of what the year had been
It should be happy
it is in the phrase after all
Piles of ribbon, wrapping paper, and excitement
Cake with colorful, hardened globs of wax dotting
the creaminess of the frosting
So why do you feel such dread?
I think it’s a mask
exuberance for ignorance
of another age come and gone
