Dull Diamonds
Their early years
brought bundles of rich harvest
Good rains, good soil
Blue skies and blue waters
Their eyes sang of sweet love, first love
Fresh diamonds newly unearthed.
Thunder slapped the skies
A little month afterwards,
Weathered neighbors watched warily
The first season, they said
Was always the hardest.
Tears ran pink
Skin morphed black-blue
Little uproots found large quakes
But the kiss, the kiss--
It had to be fine, they reasoned
We were fine.
Come again harsh hail
Crops barely sprouted
Cold ice sliced quick ribbons
Of loving hate, of hating love
Eyes swam with intolerance
Diamond dulled.
