The Perfect Man
When I was in high school,
My friends kept asking me, “How would you describe the perfect guy?”
And every time they ask I give a different answer
‘Cause I haven’t really thought about it before
And I haven’t thought about it since then
So one day, I tore a piece of paper from my notebook and wrote in careful calligraphy:
"My perfect man would have to be tall
So I could see him easily across the room when I get lost
Stand on my toes for a good night’s kiss
And be wrapped in big, comfortable arms when we sleep
He would have to know how to draw
So he’ll be able to draw my face perfectly when he misses me
Picture the beautiful places he would want me to see
And doodle cute creatures on my notebook to show everyone
He would have to be good with words
So he could make me smile over a poem he’d written just for me
Put a tear in my eye because of a well-written love letter
And have me swooning over the sweet nothings he keeps whispering on my ear
He would have to have a great voice
So he could read me books before I go to sleep
He could sing to me whenever I’m down
And send me covers of my favourite songs to listen to
And he would have to know how to dance
So he could slow dance with me while the stereo plays the most romantic of songs
Rock with his awesome dance moves in a concert
And do the happy dance with me when one of us has accomplished something great"
But things have changed in a couple of years
I think back to that piece of paper and look at the boy standing next to me
Holding my hand and smiling that beautiful smile that always makes my day
'Is he my perfect man?'
Well, he’s not that tall
But he always finds his way to me whenever I get lost
Showers me with kisses instead of giving me only one for saying good night
And gives me the biggest and warmest of hugs everyday and every night
He draws terribly
But he draws the cutest stickman version of me
Personally takes me to the places he wants me to see
And draws me lots of smiley faces that’s supposed to look like him so I can look at it every time I miss him
He’s not good with words
But he makes me smile over sincerely written love letters full of wrong spellings and grammatical errors
He makes me cry out of happiness whenever he tells me he loves me and misses me
And has me swooning over how adorable he is when he stammers and blushes and freaks out when he wants to tell me romantic things
He’s not a great singer
But he impersonates how the singers sing very well
He sings “Do you want to build a snowman?” in the cutest off-tune voice to make me smile
And listens to my favourite songs even if he thinks it’s all too girly and even if it’s all songs by Taylor Swift
He has two left feet
But he still slow dances with me even without music
He makes me laugh from his crazy dance moves that I think only he and a monkey can pull off
And he performs crazy, supposed-to-be cheerleading dance routines to cheer me on
He hasn’t met anything on my list but yes, I think he is my perfect man
Because his flaws are what made him so charming and wonderful and adorable
Well, things don’t always go the way we want them to be
But isn’t the unexpected always the most beautiful thing in the world?
