Phantoms
When your eyes find mine
On the corner of 5th and 11th
I'm unsure of us
Or where we stand
Silent suspense lingers in the air behind you
Like your memories of me
They are long gone
Forgotten
Tossed aside
Like an old sweater in July
Or a speck of sand in December
And you don't speak these words
But I see it in your love-remnant eyes
The emptiness that was envy that was erased
You turn your back to avoid eye contact
But this time the silence in me isn't sad
It was knowing you'd never come back
Or tell the same stories
Smile that same secret-scorched smile as before
Your eyes flutter down
I know they do
Or at least they did
Because you treat me as if I'm a phantom
A figment of a child's intense imagination
Never existed
And I guess I didn't
To you.
