The Apple Tree
When I open my window now
and let the air in
I don’t find it refreshing as I once did.
When I open my window now
I turn away quick
so that I do not have to see the bareness.
When I open my window now
I sometimes shed a tear for you
even though you won’t ever see it slip down my cheek.
When I open my window now
I wish I could see you by the apple tree
where I saw you last.
When I open my window now
all I see is the weed-choked pavement
and the stump of a tree that once represented our love.
Now that you are lost
And I am alone
I no longer open my window.
