Four pairs of white gloves
pulled over strong tan
hands of
four somber men in
suits and ties

Four pairs of white gloves
touch silver designs and
grip and hold on
tightly to four different
handles

Four pairs of white gloves
lay side by side on the
casket in perfect
array, silent, breathless,
still

Four pairs of white gloves
disappear,
down, down, down,
beneath the earth to be
buried with
memories

Four pairs of white gloves,
four shiny handles to a wooden
casket,
four different pairs of
hands, strong and
tan

and four different
somber men in
suits and ties who
leave the gloves
behind.
