I Wanted to Be Happy
I wore yellow for days,
previously scrounging thrift stores for
sand mustard sunflower lemonade sunlight tan sponge gold
without holes near my paler skin
a stolen rack
for fifty seven dollars; the cashier laughed.
There was a shirt that framed my knees,
I lifted my arms
the mirror gave me withered cocoons
I fell asleep fluttering
Coworkers asked why and I said
how do you make happiness
be happy
Porcelain found itself littering
the bottom of the trash
blue tumblers seaglass plates fourth of july cutlery
at the top of the food chain
I dogeared pages to show my love
scribbled on wanted posters
cut out the word waste where it appeared
Water rose above
dipped in my skin distorted image
Staved shadows limping on the street
crouched at desks peeled off and hung over a hook
