Treats and Missed Opportunities
She goes to school
with five smiley face cookies
One for a friend,
who has been having a hard time
One for her best friend,
because she feels obliged
One for her brother,
since his smiles are contagious;
and one for herself,
because she likes the taste of icing
dissolving on her tongue
The fifth cookie is labeled as an extra
But if she had control
it would go in the hands of someone special
She imagines his face lighting up at the sweet,
blue eyes meeting hers meeting hers,
and his lips blooming into a smile
that outdoes the one painted on a yellow surface
in chocolate frosting
The day eventually comes to an end
In the rush,
she brushes crumbs out of her sweater
and tries to lick the yellow frosting off her lips
In her hand she holds that white bag
that still smells of the goodie shop
She returns home
with an extra cookie
